We’ve been getting a lot of questions about Minnesota’s new THC edible law going into effect August 1, 2022. Customers are wondering – What is THC? And will these new products get me high?
The short answer to both questions is that THC is the psychoactive component in cannabis; and YES these products will get you high! Before we dive into answering these questions in detail, let’s first revisit how Minnesota’s new law came to be.
HF 3595 – Minnesota’s THC Edible Legalization Bill
In late May Minnesota lawmakers came together to pass HF 3595. HF 3595 is a transformative cannabis policy reform bill that will allow for the sale of THC edibles throughout the state of Minnesota. The new measure will allow for the sale of hemp derived THC edibles in the amount of 5 milligrams of THC per serving, with a maximum of 50 milligrams of THC per package.

What is hemp derived THC?
For all intents and purposes, hemp derived THC is the same thing as THC derived from marijuana. Hemp and marijuana are broad classifications of Cannabis that we, as a culture, have identified as being the main type of cannabis. However, that’s not necessarily accurate. Cannabis is an entire genus of flowering plants in what is known as the Cannabaceae family.
Both hemp and “marijuana” can contain high levels of CBD. THC, on the other hand, is vastly different between hemp and marijuana. Marijuana can contain up to 30% THC by dry weight, while hemp produces less than 0.3%.
However, the THC derived from hemp contains the same properties as THC from marijuana. It may be difficult to wrap our heads around this topic, but as a consumer, all you need to know is that you’ll enjoy the benefits of good ol’ mary jane!
What is THC?
THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is a primary cannabinoid found in cannabis — and is most known as the compound that gets a user “high.” THC actually binds to ECS receptors that are concentrated in the brain and central nervous system and can offer a wide range of effects. It can give the user “the munchies” due to its effect on appetite, help you get a better night’s sleep, and even reduce pain.
It’s important to remember that THC is just another Cannabinoid in the cannabis plant. Cannabinoids are natural compounds that act as an immune system for the plant, fending off predators, parasites, and pests. Because humans have receptor systems that THC binds to, we can also reap the benefits of cannabinoids for both health and enjoyment. This system, as you know, is called the endocannabinoid system (or ECS).
Will THC get me high?
The short answer to this question is yes – THC will get you high. Again, THC is the psychoactive compound that is found in cannabis. However, THC has a wide range of effects which may or may not be experienced depending on the individual. The difference can be as simple as one’s own body chemistry, but certain strains and varying concentrations of THC can also create different outcomes in how one feels.
